Sketch a Day
I want to really develop my sketching skills and the only way to do that is to practice. So, I’m committing to one sketch a day. As I mentioned a few posts ago, I am trying to learn how to draw and paint using digital medium and a tablet. You’d think it would be just the same as regular painting because the way you hold the pen and move across the tablet are the same as with other things like a watercolor brush or colored pencils, but its not. Its like learning everything from scratch again.
I’m working on mastering textures and as far as I’m concerned, there’s no better tutorial book for learning how to draw interior design surfaces and materials than Interior Design Illustrated. Yesterday I worked on creating an image of glass blocks using Copic Markers and colored pencils on Sketchbook pro. I found that the “dryer” the marker is, the better it blends. When I had the setting turned to “wet” the individual strokes were too pronounced and the color itself was too opaque to read as glass. Its not as quick as just picking up the markers and drawing on a piece of paper, but I think as soon as I get used to using a digital pen and tablet it will be. Right now, there’s a lot of extra clicking around and experimenting with different settings. The one tool, I absolutely love in SBP is the ruler which can be used to either draw straight lines or a freehand perspective. This is something that’s really lacking in both Corel Paint Essentials and Art Rage – or, at least I haven’t figured out how they work in those programs yet.
