Fabulous Ikea Fabric Transformations
I love Ikea! Oh, yes I do. And I especially love them for their fabulous fabrics. They’re fun, inspired and they’ve got some great over sized patterns. I know they’re cheap but that’s part of what makes them so perfect. Their inexpensiveness lets you go wild and experiment. I mean hell, would you really test out your sewing skills on a $180 a yard designer fabric?? I know I wouldn’t (not until I can sew better, that’s for sure).
On that note, I’ve got three fabulous Ikea fabric transformations to show you. The first is a headboard from Nadine Lerner of Bluedogzdesign.com.
For this clever metamorphosis from old mirror frame to fabulous headboard, Nadine used Ikea’s Saralisa fabric to great effect, wouldn’t you say? She’s got complete instructions and step-by-step pictures on her blog in case you’re interested in stealing her idea.
Now, on to the next! I am totally loving this mid-century modernica makeover from Billie Monster. Isn’t it adorable? This makeover is truly amazing. The chair was SO ugly before. Billie Monster has very detailed instructions and pictures on her website for those of you interested in tackling a similar project.
Here’s Jacqui, a crafty lady from Australia who bought a Latt table and chair set for her children from Ikea and solved the Ikea dilemma of turning iconic, easily recognized design pieces, into something unique. She first painted them in shades of blue then pasted Annamoa fabric onto their surfaces and then covered that with sheets of acrylic for protection. LOVE it.
Here’s another mid-century makeover using Ikea’s Kajsastina fabric from Erin over at www.suttonplace.com. Isn’t it sunny?
I had to add this last chair transformation from Loving Living Small, that uses Ikea’s Gunvor fabric. Even though it’s not a DIY, it’s gorgeous and frankly, the fabric was cheap enough for her to be able to afford to pay a professional upholsterer.
I’m working on my own fabulous Ikea fabric transformation. It’s an old half cane have upholstered chair that I’ve had for about a year. The upholstered part of the chair is actually removable, but unlike the projects above, my makeover requires quite a lot of sewing (and I’m not very good at that yet), so that post may take a while. But I promise when it’s done, you’ll be the first to know!
Do you have a fabulous Before and After? I’d love to see it. Submissions can be sent to anne (at) prettyhaus (dot) com

Love Ikea fabric and have a whole pile of it and nothing planned. Whenever I see fabric I love I buy a yeard of two. Have piles of it. I did cover a dresser in fabric. I love doing that
I know, fabric stores and art supply stores – my son won’t even go with me anymore because I wander from aisle to aisle, rhapsodizing about the gorgeous colors and textures. Oh well, at least with Ikea, you won’t break the bank.
