Every design scheme has to start somewhere and our inspiration came from the lake in our home’s backyard. I love the idea of living on water.  And though we’re in Germany and far from sunny beaches, I still wanted to incorporate the idea of water into our home’s design.  My jumping off point for our color palette is a gorgeous mother of pearl tile that has tons of texture.  Being shell, the colors range from smokey grays to deep rich brown with lot’s of iridescent blue, green and lilac for a little natural glam.

We’re going to cover the fireplace in the living room from floor to ceiling with it.  Since our main floor has a completely open plan, all the rest of the areas (kitchen, dining and living) need to co-ordinate.

We’re  going to use a smoked oak that’s oiled, on the floor, which is pretty dark, so the tiles will really pop.  Oak is actually not my favorite, because it’s too rustic looking, but according to our floor man, it withstands floor heating really well as opposed to some other woods (in our price range). Though, I have to say, once it’s smoked and oiled it’s wily nature is tamed a bit.  We were originally going to use a  herringbone patten but I’ve decided to go with long and semi-wide.  The boards will be 13 centimeters wide and about 90 cm long and they’ll be laid in a pattern similar to the mop tiles.  So, we’ve got our focal point and we’ve got our floor and I’m starting to get that tingly feeling…  I’ll keep you posted ;-)
